Mangalore, Oct 28: A seminar on ‘Table-top Airports and Safety Aspects’, will be held on Saturday October 29 and the next day at the silver jubilee auditorium of National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Suratkal here. The seminar is being held under the aegis of the civil engineering department of NITK and Mangalore Airport Diamond Jubilee Celebrations Committee. This was stated by K Tejomaya, convener of the above committee, at a press conference held here on Thursday October 27.
Union minister for corporate affairs, Dr M Veerappa Moily, is set to inaugurate the seminar at 10 am on October 29. Airports Authority of India southern region executive director, D Devaraj, director of Mangalore Airport, M R Vasudeva, and New Mangalore Port Trust vice-president, T S N Murthy, will participate as chief guests.
The seminar will cover topics like airport management and economics, designing, airport project and execution, runway expansion and related problems, development of infrastructure, points of view of pilots about table-top airports etc. Lectures by resources persons have been arranged for the seminar, he explained.
The seminar aims at throwing light on new concepts relating to table-top airports, and the need to build international standard runway. It also will take into account the fact that aircrafts had touched down at the local airport over 32,000 times between 2006 and now successfully, although an air crash had taken place last year.
NITK director, Prof Sandeep Sancheti, head of civil engineering department, Prof A U Ravishankar, and dean of research and consultancy, Prof G Umesh, were present at the press conference.
