Kasargod, Oct 27: The customs officials arrested two persons, and accused them of illegally smuggling gold ornaments worth over a crore of rupees into the country from Dubai through Kochi international airport. The arrested passengers have been identified as Muhammed Meeran (52), and Lanka Mohammed Naufal (27), both of whom are natives of Bhatkal in Karnataka.
The authorities have recovered 4,855.4 grams of gold ornaments from the arrested persons. The total worth of the ornaments has been estimated at over Rs 1.06 crore. The ornaments were hidden in their socks, it is learnt.
The policemen said that the smuggled ornaments were meant to be transported to Mumbai. They suspect that the two are members of a big international gang of smugglers having a widespread network, which is involved with such activities. Investigation has been taken up.
