Karkala, Oct 27: In a gory incident reported from Kabettu here, a resident of the area stabbed the younger sister of his wife to death on Wednesday October 26 afternoon. The victim has been identified as Shylaja (26), a daily wager. Prabhakar (35), her brother-in-law reportedly killed her.
Shyalaja, who developed differences with her Coimbatore-based husband, Arun, within three months of her marriage, had returned to her native place. As her parents are no more, she started staying with her elder sister, Jyoti, in Kabettu. It is said that Prabhakar was under the influence of alcohol when he stabbed Shyalaja to death with a knife.
Prabhakar, who works as a sculptor on contract, had come to Kabettu two days ago from a site in Kerala, where he is presently working. In the afternoon, he reportedly fought with his wife on frivolous grounds. When Shylaja tried to stop him from attacking his wife, he stabbed her in the chest. Shyalaja rushed outside shouting for help, but collapsed in the portico of their home. Jyoti, who protested, was also stabbed in the hand.
Allegedly, Prabhakar also injured a relative named Ravi (33), who stays in the neighbourhood, with the same knife, when he questioned him about the incident. Ravi, who suffered grievous injuries, is being treated in Manipal Hospital. Although the neighbours then came together and tried to take Shyalaja to hospital, she breathed her last midway, it is learnt.
Some locals claim that Prabhakar eyed Shyalaja and was trying vigorously to entice her into agreeing to have illicit relationship with him. He had dropped off his two children in the house of his sister in Kaup. Some say he had come home in the afternoon to realise his dream, but was angry to see that his wife was also present at home then.
Prabhakar later surrendered in the town police station here. District superintendent of police (SP), Ravikumar, additional SP, Venkateshappa, and police sub-inspector, Pramod Kumar, visited the spot. Investigation is on.
