Kasargod, Oct 24: Former Lok Sabha member from the local constituency, T Govindan (71), passed away at a hospital in Mangalore on Sunday October 23 afternoon. He was a state committee member of CPM, had represented Kasargod Lok Sabha constituency thrice.
Govindan was the son of T T Raman Panikkar and Chemmaratti from Payyanur. Raman was a Sanskrit scholar and Poorakkali artiste. Born on January 11, 1940, Govindan joined CPM in 1963 and worked as secretary of Kannur district unit of CPM for two years. He got elected as Lok Sabha member from Kasargod in 1996, and repeated this feat again in 1998 and 1999. He was appointed the whip of CPM in 12th Lok Sabha.
Govindan had served various bodies including Kerala State Khadi and Village Industries Commission, Weavers Society, A K G Memorial Printing Press director, etc.
After bringing his mortal remains from Mangalore, it was kept for some time at the local CPM district committee office on Sunday, before moving it to his native place, Payyannur.
Local MP, Karunakaran, district CPM secretary, K P Satishchandran etc have termed the demise of Govindan as tremendous loss to the society and CPM. MLA, K Kunhiraman, and E Chandrashekharan, also have grieved his death, adding that this has come as a shock to political, social, and cultural fields.
