Puttur, Oct 20: A District Crime Intelligence Bureau (DCIB) team of Dakshina Kannada headed by inspector, H Y Jagadish, succeeded in arresting two thieves involved with thefts in Karnataka and Kerala states. 48 mobile phone sets, a motor bike and Rs 62,500 in cash were recovered from them. The total worth of goods recovered has been estimated at Rs 3,02,500.
The arrested thieves have been identified as Mohammed Sufail (19) from Aivattoklu village of Sullia taluk, and Ismail (19), from Jayapura in Koppa taluk of Chikmagalur district. The policemen said that during interrogation, these two thieves confessed having broken open the shutters of various mobile phone stores located within the jurisdiction of Sullia, Puttur, Mangalore, Kumble and Kasargod police stations. They revealed that they had also once tried to break open the shutters of a jewellery shop in Puttur and steal ornaments from there.
The valuables stated above were recovered from the houses of the accused. The modus operandi of the thieves was simple. They steal a motor bike from a town, and leave it at the spot of the next target after stealing mobile phones. They then steal another motor bike from another place, and abandon it at the spot of their next theft. They had abandoned a motor bike at the jewellery shop that was targeted by them in Puttur too. The policemen are now culling out details of motor bikes recovered as above.
The DCIB team has handed over the case to Puttur police station. The accused were produced in the local court on Wednesday. Sudarshan, police inspector of the town police station here, and sub-inspector Aithappa of crime branch of this police station, will be in charge of further investigation.
