New Delhi, Oct 18 (IANS): The Supreme Court Tuesday issued notice to the Uttar Pradesh government and Jaypee Group on the exemption from entertainment tax granted to the Formula One (F1) sports event later this month.
An apex court bench headed by Justice D.K. Jain issued notice on a petition by Amit Kumar.
Appealing for the petitioner, counsel Sanjeev Sen told the court that exemption of entertainment tax is only given in public interest and wondered how such an exemption for F1 is going to benefit the public.
He said F1 was an elitist sport wherein even the tickets are costing Rs.35,000, thus it in no way touched the public interest.
Jaypee Group has developed the Buddh International Circuit race track for the F1 Indian Grand prix being held Oct 28-30.
