Chamaranagar, Oct 15: The district court here has sentenced a man to 22 years of imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 53,000 for raping a girl, keeping her in illegal confinement, and abetting her suicide. The verdict was delivered on Thursday October 13.
The youth, named Raghavendra (22), hails from Nitre village of Gundlupet taluk in the district. He had been accused of raping a girl, who had visited his provision shop to buy some things on January 21, 2010. Later, he reportedly kept her in illegal confinement in his shop premises. The girl, deeply hurt by these developments, had committed suicide by hanging herself at her home.
After conducting investigation, circle inspector of Gundlupet police station, T Ashok Kumar, had filed charge sheet in the court. District and session judge, Master R K G M M Mahaswamiji, who conducted the hearing in the case, pronounced the judgment.
Out of the above, one year imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1,000 have been imposed towards keeping the girl in illegal confinement. An additional three years imprisonment and fine of Rs 2,000 were towards threatening her, nine years imprisonment and Rs 25,000 fine for raping the girl, and nine years imprisonment and Rs 25,000 were levied for causing suicide of the rape victim.
The judge has also ordered payment of Rs 40,000 out of the above fine to the girl’s family.
