Udupi, Apr 22: Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, observed internationally from April 14-20, commemorates the indispensable role of medical laboratory professionals and pathologists in healthcare and patient advocacy. Kasturba Hospital laboratory services joined in the celebration of Medical Laboratory Professional Week at Dr TMA Pai Hall, Manipal, with this year's theme being 'The Future is Lab'.

Dr Avinash Shetty, medical superintendent of Kasturba Hospital Manipal, was the chief guest of the event. In his address, he shed light on the origins of this observance, tracing it back to 1975 when the American Society for Medical Technology established it to highlight the pivotal role of laboratory professionals in healthcare. He emphasized the tireless efforts of laboratory professionals, whose accurate and timely test results significantly impact patient diagnosis, treatment, and overall healthcare outcomes.

The guest of honour, Dr Krishnananda Prabhu, associate dean of KMC Manipal, elaborated on the theme 'The Future is Lab'. He underscored the evolving role of laboratories as not only sites of scientific exploration but also as sanctuaries for discovery, innovation, and progress.

Dr Ravindra Maradi, director of Kasturba Hospital Lab Services, welcomed the gathering and provided an introduction to the event. He highlighted the commitment of Kasturba Hospital Laboratory Services to excellence in diagnostic services, patient care, and medical research, boasting its accreditation by the NABL.

Dr Sindhura Lakshmi extended the vote of thanks, acknowledging the presence and contributions of various dignitaries and personnel including Dr Mary Mathew - head of pathology; Dr Sushma Belurkar - in-charge of hematology lab; Dr Vijetha Shenoy - in-charge of clinical biochemistry; Dr Barnini and Dr Padmaja - in-charge of microbiology lab; Dr Suba Sooriya - head of nursing services; as well as the heads of all supporting and administrative staff were present.

The celebration of Medical Laboratory Professional Week at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, not only honoured the dedication and expertise of laboratory professionals but also reinforced the pivotal role they play in advancing healthcare and patient well-being.
