Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Oct 10: A number of places in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts experienced rains coupled with thunder and lightning late evening on Sunday October 9, after a long break. While the rain was heavy in some places like Kotekar Beeri in Mangalore taluk, as well as Karkala and Sulia taluks, most areas reported light rains.

Sullia town was the worst affected, because of haphazard nature of ongoing state highway widening work there. Some vehicles got stranded while negotiated muddy potholes in that town. Bantwal taluk also received copious rains.

Complaints of power and telephone connections getting disrupted often have poured in. A daily wager named Koragappa Moolya from Karkala, working for water supply unit of the town, suffered from disorientation after suffering shock due to lightning on Sunday evening. He was rushed to Manipal hospital immediately. Lightning also struck a house owned by Asiya, resident of five cents colony in Kairoli in Karimanelu village near Venoor. She suffered a loss of around Rs 10,000 by way of burnt electrical fittings, although the family members had a providential escape.

Napoklu and Somwarpet in Kodagu district registered the highest rainfall of seven cm each. Several other districts too got rainfall albeit to a lesser extent. The meteorological department’s prediction valid till Tuesday morning expects light to normal rains in some places in southern hinterland and a few more in northern hinterland.
