Mormugao: Former CM Dr Barbosa Laid to Rest

Mormugao, Oct 10: The mortal remains of former Goa Chief Minister Dr Luis Proto Barbosa was buried, with full State honours, as per Christian rites at his native village Cansaulim, here on Sunday October 9.

A sea of humanity thronged the burial place as VIPs jostled with commoners to pay their last respects to Dr Barbosa. A contingent of the Goa police reversed arms as mark of respect to the departed soul. The buglers played the last post followed by ceremonial gun salute firing 5 shots in the air.

Chief Minister Digambar Kamat, PWD minister Churchill Alemao,  Revenue Minister Jose Phillip D’ Souza, Urban Development, Joaquim Alemao , Deputy Speaker Mauvin Godinho, MP South Francisco Sardinha, MP Rajya Sabha Shri Shantaram Naik and former Chief Minister Shashikala Kakodkar, Dr Wilfred de Souza, Power Minister Aleixo Sequeira,  Leader of Opposition i Manohar Parrikar, Commissioner for NRI Affairs Shri Eduardo Faleiro, Chairman of State Law Commission Shri Ramakant Khalap, MLA   Damu Naik, Shri Francisco D’ Souza, Former Ministers Shaikh Hassan Haroon,  Luis Alex Cardozo, former MLA’s Arecio D’Souza. Teotono Pereira, President of  NCP Prof Surendra Shirsat, Justice Eurico da Silva,  Director General of Police Dr Aditya Arya, Senior Police Officers, Director of Information & Publicity, Menino Peres were amongst those present on the occasion.

 Dr Barbosa’s family members, including his wife Alice Vas e Barbosa, daughters Nalini and Nanette, and son Dr Noel and grandchildren were present. The Eucharistic celebration was conducted at St Thomas Church, Cansaulim by the Archbishop of Sindhudurg, Allwyn Barretto.  The State Government had declared three days' mourning. Dr Barbosa passed away on Thursday.
