Beltangady: Lone tusker destroys farms in Kalmanja

Daijiworld Media Network – Beltangady (MS)

Beltangady, Apr 8: The menace of wild elephants, which had momentarily ceased, reared its head again on Saturday night when a solitary tusker invaded the farmland of M S Prakash, a resident of Berke in Kalmanja village, wreaking havoc on crops.

The marauding pachyderm mercilessly uprooted over 40 plantain trees and five arecanut trees, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. This incident comes just two months after another wild elephant had vandalized a palm tree in the same farm, completely demolishing it this time.

The resurgence of the wild elephant herd was witnessed a month ago in various nearby areas such as Charmady, Mundaje, Kadirudyavara, Kalmanja, Belalu, and Bandaru. Subsequently, the herd was spotted near the Netravati river before vanishing from sight. However, their return signals a renewed phase of attacks on the local farms and communities.
