Udupi, Oct 3: District in-charge minister, Dr V S Acharya, has directed district superintendent of police (SP), Dr Ravikumar, to conduct detailed investigation into the sad demise of national level athlete, Prathvi, at Brahmavar recently. He passed on the instruction, after a delegation comprising Katapadi Vishwanath Temple Renovation Committee secretary, Krishna Sanil, zilla panchayat president, Katapadi Shanakar Poojary, and former minister, Vasant Salian, met him, and impressed on the need to undertake an in-depth investigation into her death. The minister also asked the SP to personally monitor progress in the case.
Kundapur assistant superintendent of police, Ram Niwas Sepat, was appointed as inquiry officer in the case by the SP on Sunday. Sepat began his investigation immediately. The SP said that in normal course, a time of three months is allotted for such inquiries, and that action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry. The ASP said that he will gather all information and points and submit his report as soon as possible.
It may be recalled that various organizations and people have been demanding for a thorough investigation into the reasons leading to the untimely death of a promising athlete, Prathvi, as they feel that pressures and agonies brought about by outsiders had forced her to commit suicide. On the basis of certain information found in Prathvi’s diary, the policemen have arrested one person. There are allegations that some pages of the diary have been torn out, and that Prathvi used to suffer harassment in the hands of people connected with sports activities during her stay at sports hostel, and that the local police had failed to take into account all material evidence in the case.
