Mangalore, Oct 3: The personnel of the city special forest mobile squad arrested a person named Babu Naik (36), from Kadike, when he was trying to sell four deer pelts and 11 antlers at Maddur village in Udupi district on Sunday October 2. The raid was conducted, based on a tip off.
The team led by police sub-inspector, K R Manjunath, visited the village and arrested the accused. It is learnt, the accused confessed to the policemen that the pelts and antlers had been handed over to him for sale by a person named Putta Naik. A case under Wildlife Conservation Act was registered against Babu Naik, and the case was transferred to Hebri police station for further investigation.
Putta Naik is absconding. Hebri station house officer, Santosh Shetty, has launched a drive to find him out. The policemen said that deer pelts and antlers have high demand in foreign countries, where these pelts and antlers can fetch lacs of rupees. They also added that this was the first case from the district in which these items were confiscated.
