Mangaluru, Mar 16: Compensation of Rs. two lakh each was distributed at the DC office to the families of Yashvith, Nirup, Anvith, and Raghavendra, students of a school in Suratkal, who accidentally drowned in the Melkoppala Nandini river near Haleyangadi.
Former MLA Mohideen Bawa approached chief minister Siddaramaiah during the latter's recent visit to Udupi and apprised him of the tragedy. Bawa also appealed to the CM to release compensation from the special relief fund. However, the compensation could not be provided as the report of the tragedy did not reach the CM's office in Bengaluru from the DC office of Dakshina Kannada.
Bawa accompanied the families of the victims to the office of Deputy commissioner Mullai Muhilan and explained the situation to him. The DC took the initiative and ensured that the concerned report was sent within just three days, leading to the distribution of compensation to the families of the victim boys.
Bawa also expressed gratitude to CM Siddaramaiah for promptly responding to the needs of the affected families. ADC Santhosh, Yogish Jeppu, and others were present during the distribution of the cheques to the beneficiaries.
