'This is a true act of democracy': US singer Mary Millben hails PM Modi on CAA implementation

New Delhi, Mar 11 (IANS): Thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his "compassionate leadership", American actress-singer Mary Millben on Monday lauded the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) as a 'true act of democracy and pathway to peace'.

The Central government on Monday notified the rules for the Citizenship Amendment Act, five years after it was passed in Parliament, paving the way for its implementation just ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

In a post shared on 'X', Millben, who has praised PM Modi in the past as the "best leader for India", said: "This is a pathway towards peace. This is a true act of democracy".

As "a Christian, woman of faith, and global advocate for religious freedom", she applauded

PM Modi-led government's announcement, granting Indian nationality to persecuted non-Muslim migrants, Christians, Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, and Parsis from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.

"Thank you PM @narendramodi, @AmitShah, and the Indian Government for your compassionate leadership and most importantly for upholding religious freedom in welcoming those persecuted," the award-winning singer said in her post.

Millben became the first American artist to perform as an invited cultural ambassador for the US at an event commemorating India's 75th anniversary of Independence on August 15, 2022.

Her rendition of the National Anthem performed virtually in 2020 for the 74th Anniversary of India's Independence Day and the devotional hymn 'Om Jai Jagdish Hare' for the 2020 Diwali, have been praised and viewed by millions across the US, India, and the world. The CAA -- an integral part of the BJP's 2019 Lok Sabha polls manifesto -- will enable the granting of citizenship to people from Hindus, Sikhs, Jain, Buddhist, and Parsi communities, who had migrated to India before December 31, 2014, from neighbouring countries because of religious persecution.

It was enacted by the Parliament in December 2019 amid large-scale demonstrations by the Muslim community and the Opposition parties.

"Ben" is a suffix applied to a name and it means " sister" in Gujarati, eg Maniben , Shantaben etc. Milliben proves she is a true sister.

Dear Agnes, She does not know head or tail but i am sure she knows these many events and i have a gut feeling these might have prompted her. 1. On 22 September 2013, 75 Christians were killed in a suicide attack at the historic All Saints Church in the old quarter of the regional capital, Peshawar. 2. On 15 March 2015, two blasts took place at a Roman Catholic Church and a Christ Church during Sunday service at Youhanabad town of Lahore. At least 15 people were killed and seventy were wounded in the attacks 3. On 27 March 2016, at least 70 were killed and over 340 wounded when a suicide bomber targeting Christians celebrating Easter attacked a playground in Lahore. 4. On 17 December 2017, a bomb killed nine and injured fifty-seven 5. On August 16, 2023, twenty-six Christian churches in Jaranwala, Punjab, Pakistan were burnt down by acts of arson, and homes belonging to Christian families were looted and destroyed by Muslim rioters Then there foced conversions, abductions, killings in the guise of false accusations of Blasphemy. So if something is done to give succor to those helpless Christians welcome it.

Manipur incident is a sad incident of tribal groups fighting each other. Some decades Nagas and Kukis have fought for tribal Land and influence and this continued for nearly 7 long years. Check which religion the Nagas and Kukis belong to. So essentially it was not religious war but a tribal war primiarily arisng out of a flawed reservation sytem. Indian Army is doing its duty in the Riot areas. Rioters are booked by police whichever group they belong to. Not saying here that everything was just and perfect. i concede that many things could have been better. The moot argument is that minorities in Pakstan, Afganistan and Bangladesh have historically, sytematically eliminated. To get a real perspective of the situation read the real picture from a muslim journalist of Pakistan Mr Pervez Hoodboy titled "Pakistans terrified Christians"
