Bhatkal: Strong Currents at Sea Take Life of Woman, Two Others Critical

Bhatkal, Sep 28: A young woman lost her life while playing with the waves at Apsara Konda beach located 32 km from Bhatkal on Tuesday September 27.

The deceased has been identified as 24-year-old Parveen Banu, an IT worker in Bangalore, daughter of Ibrahim. She had come to Bhatkal to attend a marriage, it is learnt.

Along with Parveen, her relatives Ishrath Banu (25) and Sakina (27) were also washed away by the strong currents. Though they were rescued by the locals, their condition is said to be critical. They were first admitted to Honnavar government hospital and later shifted to Manipal hospital.
 
They were among a group of eight who had come in a car at 4 pm on Tuesday.
 
Parveen Banu’s body will be buried at a graveyard in Maghdoom Colony. A case has been registered at Honnavar and Bhatkal police station.

    Very sad event. The nature, sea, ocean, tidal waves etc are quite unpredictable and could sometimes be cruel and dangerous. One moment you think you are safe and calmly play with the waves on the ses shore, and the next moment, suddenly from nowhere large waves appear (especially during high tidal hours) and drags you into the sea. It happened to me once on the Ullal beach in Mangalore a few years ago. One evening, I was, along with a few family members, sitting on some rockey stones on the seashore, at a fairly good height, which we thought was quite safe, and all of a sudden, this huge tidal wave appeared from nowhere, and we were all virtually thrown into the water. Fortunately, we were dragged to the shore side and thus were safe, though we were quite embarassed about the whole event as we were fully drenched, and it also drew quite a bit of laughter from the large spectators around. So, my advice to the beach goers, especially to the non-swimmers, always to be extra careful and to keep safe from the tidal waves.

    My heart goes to Parveen`s parents and family. May they find comfort and strength to bear the loss and Parveen`s soul rest in peace. I wish the other two women a speedy recovery as well.
