Udupi, Sep 28: A four year-old girl, who was standing by the side of national highway 66 near Yermal Garadi, Padubidri in the district, was knocked down and instantly killed by a pickup truck on Tuesday September 27, even as the girl’s hapless mother looked on helplessly. The girl, who lay in a pool of blood ,succumbed to her head injuries.
The girl has been identified as Soumya, daughter of Hanumanth and Durgavva, natives of Bisnala village in Hungund, Bagalkot district. Hanumanth works as casual labourer in the thermal power plant of Udupi Power Corporation Ltd near Padubidri. Soumya was the eldest of the three children of the couple.
Soumya used to attend an Anganwadi inYermal village. However, as Tuesday happened to be a holiday for the Anganwadi, she had accompanied her mother, it is learnt. A pickup truck moving towards Padubidri from Malpe hit her.
A case was registered in Padubidri police station. Mahadevi, station house officer of the police station, has taken up investigation.
