Mangalore, Sep 25: Mangalore is in dire need of a good stadium as many play cricket with enthusiasm, but due to lack of space no such projects have been initiated, he observed, adding that a stadium could be built if two acres of land is provided close to the city, said former Indian ace paceman from Karnataka Javagal Srinath.
'Mysore Express' Srinath was in the city on Sunday September 25 to take part in the marathon organised by KMC Hospital to mark ‘World Heart Day’.
Speaking to reporters later at the Dakshina Kannada Cricket Association building, he said that in Mysore and Hubli work on the construction of stadia has been taken up already, while in Shimoga it is yet to start. This would also facilitate practicing cricket on turf, he said.
He was of the opinion that any age between 15 and 22 may be ripe for a cricketer to make his mark in the game, provided he is interested and has an honest approach. These days youngsters with calibre take up the game, but just one failure is enough to make them give it up which should not be happening, he said.
"Sustaining interest in cricket throughout one's career is important, and to become a pace bowler one should start bowling at an early age and bowl at least 800 to 900 overs in a year," he advised.
Srinath further said that KPL matches will start in February and auctions will be in the month of December. About Sachin Tendulkar's suggestions to implement changes in the one day format of the game (that a match should be divided into four innings of 25 overs sides batting alternatively), Srinath said 'it’s a good idea'.
About UDRS issue, Srinath, who is now a match referee, said that ICC is in the process of solving the issue. As a referee his reponsibilities have increased, he added.
He sought the cooperation of people's representatives of this region to support the game of cricket in tune with other districts that are taking noteworthy steps.
Dr Srikanth Rai, president, DKCA, Arun Kumar Shetty, secretary, DKCA, treasurer Venugopal Kaikamba among others welcomed him.
