Mangalore, Sep 24: In tune with the request of the Lakshadweep administration, a 300 metre-long jetty is proposed to be built on the northern side of the old port here. The jetty will come up for facilitating movement of goods and tourists between the city and Lakshadweep islands.
The administration of Lakshadweep, which is a union territory, had approached Karnataka government with a request to set up this jetty to streamline traffic of goods and people between the city and the islands. As per the request, the state government has prepared an estimate for Rs 40 crore relating to the project.
It is learnt that this jetty will have additional facilities like hi-tech lounge, seating facility for 50 tourists, huge warehouses for storage of goods, etc. The estimate has been sent to Lakshadweep administration.
The entire cost of the project will be borne by Lakshadweep administration, while execution and provision of basic infrastructure will be the responsibility of Karnataka government. The jetty, once built, will enable easy and early clearance of several boats unlike at present, it is gathered.
