Puttur: Road Accident - Tribunal Orders Compensation of Rs 29 lac

Puttur, Sep 22: In a landmark judgement, the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal here has awarded a compensation of Rs 29 lac to the family of a person who lost his life in a road accident. Through an order passed on Wednesday September 21, the court ordered the insurance company and owner of the tanker that was involved in the accident, to pay the compensation to the claimants.
On June 14, 2007, K Ramachandra Bhat, principal of Vittal PU College, who was a resident of Bajattur, was killed after the Kinetic Honda two-wheeler he was riding, was hit by a tanker near Kootelu Bridge, Uppinangady.
Thereafter, Bhat’s mother, Sharadamma, and son, Krishna Prasad, had filed a claim in the said tribunal, seeking compensation and family maintenance, as the late Bhat was the breadwinner of the family. Velu Murugan, driver of the tanker, owner of the tanker, Doraiswamy, and the insurance company which covered the vehicle, were named as defendants.
The judge of the tribunal, P T Kattimani, while passing the above order, also asked the defendants to pay interest on the said sum at the rate of six percent per annum from the day of the claim application till payment. Advocates, Mahesh Kaje, Kishore Kolattaya, and Prasadkumar Rai, had appeared in the court on behalf of the claimants.
