Bangalore: Dumped on Facebook by Boyfriend, IIM-B Girl Ends Life
Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore
Bangalore, Sep 21: In an incident that has once again raised the question of pressures exerted by modern-day trends, an IIM-B student committed suicide when her boyfriend updated his Facebook status after a failed love affair.
According to reports, Malini Murmu, a 23-year-old girl from Jamshedpur was in a relationship with one Abhishek. They had a fight and broke up, after which the boy updated his Facebook status with, 'Feeling super cool today. Dumped my new ex-girlfriend. Happy Independence Day.'
Mailini, not able to bear the public embarassment on the social networking site, took the extreme step by hanging herself in her hostel room. The incident came to light when her friends came to enquire on her after she had missed a whole day's class.
On receiving no response even after repeated knocks on her door, the anxious students took the help of the security guards to break open the door and found her dead.
Police registered a case of abetment to suicide against boy, after her father Biswas Mumru filed a complaint. A note was found on Malini's laptop that clearly mentioned that Abhishek had shouted at her and used foul language.
Her body has been handed over to her parents and will be shifted to Ranchi in Jharkhand where they stay.
IIM-B said in a statement, "Malini Murmu, 23, hailed from Jamshedpur and was found dead in her hostel room. Malini came to IIM-B last June, having worked at Infosys after completing her BTech from KIIT. We have lost a bright young person in the prime of her life. On behalf of the entire IIM-B community, Professor Pankaj Chandra, director, has conveyed the deepest distress on behalf of every member of the community to Malini's parents, family and friends."
It has become a trend with youngsters to update their status on social networking sites on any personal matter, with least thought to others whose life it might affect. Bangalore has already earned the reputation of being the suicide capital of the country, and most of these are due to failed love affairs.
There is a need for colleges and schools to hold counselling sessions on social networking, it merits, demerits and the etiquettes to be followed. Incidents of break ups on Facebook and other sites has increased of late, and Malini's case proves the hazards of this practice.
