Mangalore, Sep 21: Madras Cements Limited (MCL), under the aegis of Association of Consulting Civil Engineers (India), Mangalore centre, celebrated ‘Engineers Day’ at Hotel Ocean Pearl here, on Monday September 19 to commemorate the 151st birth anniversary of Sir M Vishveshwaraiah.
K C Naik, president, CREDAI, and city’s leading real estate developer was the chief guest on the occasion.
Jaya Kumar, senior general manager–marketing, MCL, and Anil K Pillai, assistant general manager–technical, were present on the dais.
A documentary on Sir M Vishveshvariah was screened to reflect on his deeds, simplicity, and the knowledge of the legend.
Two prominent engineers - Dr K S Babu Narayan and Girish Bharadwaj - were felicitated with the ‘Eminent Engineer Award’ for their contribution to the construction industry in the region. Premanand Shenoy was presented with the ‘Ananthamitra Kalbhavi Award’ for achieving excellence in his profession and for his extraordinary contributions to the organization.
The celebration was attended by nearly 170 engineers representing various organizations.
Vijay Mayya, chairman, ACCE (I), Mangalore centre, welcomed the gathering. Vinayak Pai T proposed the vote of thanks.
Ashok and Vimal Kirti Jain, vice-presidents (South), ACCE, treasurer Anil S D’Souza, Rajendra Kalbhavi, Madras Cements Limited Mangalore technical manager Suraj Shetty, and marketing manager Siju were present on the occasion.
MCL is a sister concern of RAMCO Group which has an annual turnover exceeding Rs 3,000 crore. The Group has diverse interests including cement, ready mix concrete, cement fibre products, cotton and synthetic yarn, software systems, and wind farms. The in-house facility of RAMCO Research and Development Centre maintains the quality control of each product by rigorous testing at all levels.
MCL began operations in 1958 with an initial capacity of 3,000 tonnes per annum, and has grown to become the fifth largest cement producer in India with an installed capacity of 10 million tonnes per year. Its production units are spread over south India with three plants in Tamil Nadu, one each in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The plants are credited with ISO Certification for both quality and environmental management. The Centre for Science and Environment (CSC), New Delhi, voted for Alathiyur (Tamil Nadu) plant as the greenest cement company in the country for the year 2005.
