Bantwal, Sep 20: To mark the jubilee year of St Paul, the parish council and the local people of Delanthabettu, here with the support of Bishop Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza have put up a new church as a memorial to St Paul for the spiritual needs of the local people.
The foundation stone has been blessed by Fr Denis Moras Prabhu, the vicar general of our Diocese.
Delanthabettu of Kanyana Village, is the sub-station of the rural parish of Our Lady of Dolours Church, Vittal, in Mangalore Diocese. It is located 15 Kms away from Vittal church, and 65 Kms away from Mangalore, the Diocesan Headquarters.
It is in Eastern Deanery dedicated to St Paul who is also the patron saint of this Sub station situated in the valley of hills, near the extensive government reserved forests of Kalanjemale. This is located in the border of Kerala and Karnataka States.
It is very much neglected and backward malnad area. The local people are marginal farmers, agricultural abourers and beedie rollers. The proposed parish has 110 Catholic families with population of 625. The local poor people have been aspiring to have a church since 40 years. They have bought enough land for the cemetery and church building. In the course of time, they put up a shed of coconut leaves roof supported by jungle wood poles. Often this temporary structure is damaged by the heavy winds and the poor local people find it very hard to repair it.
The estimated cost of construction of church is Rs 80 lac.
The local people are readily prepared to offer their unskilled abour as their contribution towards this project. However, with no ready funds in hand but with firm faith in God, and support of our Patron, the generous public including well wishers like yourselves we are launching in the project. We earnestly appeal to everyone especially the reader of this appeal to help us generously and thus help this noble cause.
