Mangalore: Late Msgr Fr Fred Pereira, Vinay Hegde Conferred IIPP Leadership Awards

Mangalore, Sep 10: The annual 'Leadership Award’ in education and communication for the year 2010-2011 instituted by the International Orientation Center and International Institute for Public Policy (under the sponsorship of Max and Jessie Rasquinha, USA) was conferred on Vinay Hegde, Chancellor, Nitte University, and Monsignor Fr Fred Pereira (posthumous award), former vicar general of Mangalore Diocese here on Saturday September 10.
The awards were presented at a banquet reception ceremony held at the AIMIT campus of St Aloysius College, Beeri, Kotekar.
Accepting the honour, Vinay Hegde said that education is a never ending quest for knowledge and one should look at mentors to take the right steps in life. “Obtaining knowledge also paves the way for responsibility of sharing it among others,” he added.
The family of Fr Pereira received his award. Max E Rasquinha made the opening remarks. Anita Cordiero invoked God’s blessings. Savitha Shenoy sung ‘Vande Mataram’ while Fr Denzil Lobo sung ‘I Have a Dream’ in his lovely voice much to the applause of the audience.
Urmila Shetty, divisional governor, spoke on “What’s Leadership?” Fr Valerian D’Souza narrated the life of late Fr Pereira. Bharathi Shevgoor, area governor, spoke on “Whats Communication?” and said that modern technical developments have adversely affected the actual quintessence of communication. Joe Gonsalves narrated the life of Vinay Hegde.
On the occasion, a scholarship award of Rs 25,000 each was awarded to two candidates—Rajesh Martin Pais of St Joseph’s Engineering College, and Mehanaze of NMAM Institute of Technology, Nitte.
A classical dance programme was held on the occasion. Later, a renowned school band of the city led the procession to the banquet hall where various entertainment programmes were held. Leslie Rego compered the programme.
