Mangalore: Student Attempts Suicide over Alleged Torture, College Denies

Mangalore, Sep 6: In an incident that occurred on Tuesday September 6, Shloka, a student of Ramakrishna College, Bunts Hostel here attempted suicide by consuming phenyl stored in the toilet of the college. She has been admitted to KMC hospital near Jyothi here. It is learnt that she is out of danger.
Shloka is a student of second year BCom and has been staying in a PG accommodation in Ballalbaug. Other students admitted her to hospital in time and saved her.
It is alleged that the principal of the college tortured her for attending a talent show programme without prior permission of the college and asked her to bring her parents to meet the college authority.
Soon after the incident, other students vented their anger by smashing the window panes of the college. They alleged that the principal has been torturing students by imposing fines for missing classes and withholding hall tickets during exams.
However, principal of the college Naveen Shetty told mediapersons that it is the duty of the institution to safeguard the values of discipline and ensure that students follow norms. He also denied all allegations and clarified that no student was tortured for any reason.
Kadri police SI Vinayak and ACP Ravindra Gadadi have begun taking statements and a case is yet to be registered.
