Mangalore: Student Attempts Suicide over Alleged Torture, College Denies

Mangalore, Sep 6: In an incident that occurred on Tuesday September 6, Shloka, a student of Ramakrishna College, Bunts Hostel here attempted suicide by consuming phenyl stored in the toilet of the college. She has been admitted to KMC hospital near Jyothi here. It is learnt that she is out of danger.

Shloka is a student of second year BCom and has been staying in a PG accommodation in Ballalbaug. Other students admitted her to hospital in time and saved her.

It is alleged that the principal of the college tortured her for attending a talent show programme without prior permission of the college and asked her to bring her parents to meet the college authority.

Soon after the incident, other students vented their anger by smashing the window panes of the college. They alleged that the principal has been torturing students by imposing fines for missing classes and withholding hall tickets during exams.
 
However, principal of the college Naveen Shetty told mediapersons that it is the duty of the institution to safeguard the values of discipline and ensure that students follow norms. He also denied all allegations and clarified that no student was tortured for any reason.
 
Kadri police SI Vinayak and ACP Ravindra Gadadi have begun taking statements and a case is yet to be registered.

    First of all it is advisable to see the girls academic carrier. If she has nothing to fear she should have called the parents and drank MILK instead. Naveen is a straight forward person as I know him. Ultimately it our children should excel. It is advisable both parties sit together and settle the problem instead of going ga ga. It is high time parents take care of your children who are not staying with you and ask them to report of any mal operation at college instead of taking drastic actions like this girl did. She should understand what the parents are going through.

    The principle of the college was very right in collecting the fine and also asking the parents to come to the college. once the student recovers completely the student must be asked to give proper explanation as to why she tried to commit suicide. if it is just for the reason stated above then she should be given TC along with those students who threw stones and created a hungama in the college premises. During their graduation level if the students act so immature they can never be a good citizen of this country. Mr.Naveen Shetty was right in taking this disciplinary action.

    I strongly support Principal Navin Shetty's actions. Now days children are not afraid of parents, nor they listen to them, but they are scared of teachers, they are te only people who can correct them, and all parents should support teachers. God bless the diciplined Principal. Its absolutely nonsense that parrents fighting with teacher for hitting thir children. Without punishment no body can correct children.

    I dont understand this. She is an adult and I dont know why she has to take permission from the College or even her parents to participate in a talent show. It is TALENT so get that right. She was not representing the College.
    I agree that there should be discipline in Schools/Colleges.

    The Principal is 100% right in asking the student to bring in her parents for breaking the rules & regulations of the institute.She is guilty of something, thats why she has taken this step.The institute is right in imposing fines for students bunking classes & breaking rules, if students dont like to have any control over them they should quit the college & stay at home, indulge in whatever they want under the banner of their parents

    Good comment by Shanavaz Kukkikatte.Everybody should support the Principal Sri Naveen Shetty who is doing his duty as the head of the institution.I know Sri Shetty a deciplined man and managing the instituion in a very good manner.Under his stewardship the college is making doing very good job.

    In this issue, in my entire comments, it is a generalized statement in the educational Institutions how few lecturers, teachers, including Principal are abusing their power. In this platform it is not right to mention the number of cases of such incidents.

    I have never blamed college authorities but ridiculed in general the insane, mean mentality of those teachers, lecturers who think by putting undue pressure they are imparting discipline but it is nothing short of phobia type psychological tactic to control.

    I have clearly mentioned Discipline leads to students growth where as undue mental torture leads to students downfall and a good principal always encouraging personality of the students.

    You have mentioned ” myself being a lecturer we know the present generation “. My staright forward question to you, before you started your career as a lecturer, did u undergo training or directly as a lecturer after your Master degree/Phd?

    I do know for primary, higher primary, high School teachers has teachers’ training/B.Ed. Won’t you think, the lecturers require training how to handle students, work shop regularly and they have to invest time in similar type of workshop relating to students & their developments.

    Wish there will be good, healthy environment in all educational insinuations amongst students, parents and teachers.

    To All who are supporting student:
    Just clear whether student did the right thing by attempting suicide? is the suicide be the final justice for all? If yes then for each and everything all can comitt suicide to get the justice done. So now even according to the law of india even the student has to be filed in this matter for attempting suicide. If the Principal said anything to her then do people think that her parents are not there to speak to principla if the girl is in right way? and more importantly if the talent show is from college then college itslef will give the permission if she had cleared the screening of talent show. No college will say dont go for the talent show.

    The Principal is doing his duty to maintain the standard of the Insititution.

    Students are required to abide by the discipline of the Institution.

    The Parents should inculcate Indian values in the children so that they become strong and take these things positively.

    Bhagavad Githa and Yoga should be taught in the Schools to make the students strong both mentally and physically.

    I think we are drawing conclusions even before investigations have been completed. The girl would know the reasons for taking this extreme step. Life can be very complex for youngsters in this competitive world, and we need to lend them our support and understanding and good guidance. So let's be patient and find out what could be troubling this youngster. A good counselling could help her get back on her feet with courage.

    This is utter rubbish being done on the part of students.
    The principal seems to be doing his job. If you consider asking a student to bring parents to college as torture, then such students outlook to life is very bleak.
    Imposing fines for missing classes is a good move. It actually acts as a deterrent. Also, if there is an attendance shortage from the student's side, then the college is bound by regulations when it comes to withholding the hall ticket.

    Extra curricular activities should be encouraged. But not at the cost of the curricular activities. Even abroad, like in the US, students who do not score a decent grade are barred from taking part in sports activities.
    These kids need to grow up.

    Schools and colleges must have
    discipline, but some Principals
    go overboard to show their power and authority and create totally
    insane and unnecessary rules and
    regulations to control the students,
    and that bossy nature gives a lot of pleasure for them.

    In Pre-University and 1st year
    degress course, we had a good
    Principal and the students had
    freedom and fun in college. Then he was replaced by another headache
    Principal who was related to one of the prominent family in Kerala
    belongs to the Church which owned
    the college.

    Constantly smiling Principal came with new regulations and turned the
    campus like an open prison.

    Missed class fine was changed from
    10 ps to Re. 1. This was in 1963.
    Boys must wear blue coloured shirts,
    but the girls can wear any colour
    they like. Boys can't walk through
    the area where girls are gathering.
    The Principal began to walk around
    the campus with a long stick.
    College unions were not permitted.
    Book stores and other stores operated by the neighbours were
    driven out of business.

    Finally, he was expelled by the management for some serious
    crimes. Some principals treat the
    college students like primary
    school children, that is too terrible. The college campus is not a military camp, but that is
    place the young people are trying to get educated: and they must have
    a favourable surrounding with freedom to develop, both academically and socially without
    any tormenting fear.

    It is said as Talent show. There are many type of talent shows one can take part.
    If the talent show is academic, it is not a bad thing to take part. There is also a talent show where are girls are sexually exploited.
    It is college or schools duty to check if the student takes part in any talent show during academic hours.
    Parents blame the college/school for any adverse happenings.
    What was the problem for the student to get parents or guardian to show genuineness of talent show.
    It could have been something antisocial or immoral.
    Let all open their eyes wide before passing judgements.

    Guy's dont jump into conclusion...It is not participating in a talent show..as a student of the college...But it is attending the the show...!!!??? Since she was staying in the hostel, it was better for her to take permission of the warden...!!???

    There should be a untold story between the lines I guess...I don't think asking to bring parents to the institution, though it is a annoying act for student, it is not the lone reason for suicide attempt.To take this far extreme act has something untold stories which should be investigated.Principal or teachers and students are to be friends rather than of foes concerned must be adhered.The responsibility lies on more @ seniors and Students are @ tender age so that should be taken in to account.My question is that what is doing Student union of Rama Krishna College?

    may be she has participated that talent show without permission of her parrents for some other reason.thats why she was affraid of bringing her parents as requested by principal.for a simple reason of bringing parents nobody will go to suicide.something fishy.ordering to bring parents is not a torture.is putting fine for less attendance,leave,or absence for class,strict vigilence at college to protect the college environment and the reputation of the institute and thereby giving quality eductaion to students does it amount to torture?.

    After committing crime it is human nature to deny it, in order to save one's face to the society and also punishment & humiliation.

    It is not surprising that those who sit on power, abuse it, whether it is govt department, educational institutions etc.. In educational institutions, the lecturers, teachers and Principal think by using undue mental torture, they are imparting discipline. It is nothing but their insane, mean mentality and outlook. Discipline leads to students growth where as undue mental torture leads to students downfall.

    A good principal always encouraging personality to the students. Govt. of Karnataka is very much encourging studnets to partiucapate extra curricular activities.. Attending talent show programme is one of those. Educational institutions should show leniency to the students as they are bringing name to the college and the principal should bury his or her ego and strive for the betterment of the students.

    My sincere prayers for the recovery of Shloka from all the trauma and wish her all best in her life. Also good wishes to the studdents who have admitted Shloka to the hospital in time and saved her life.

    I fully support the principal and he is absolutely right in saying that institutions interests must be safeguarded and there must be good discipline. The student in question should have asked the college management for the permission as she is representing the college as its student and not as a private individual. Here it is not communual approach or fall out of any particular ideology... Educational institutions must maintain discipline and codes of conduct. Nothing wrong in principal's decission. Its for the betterment of both students and college. The parents should stand by the principal and his decission. As a parent I support him whole heartedly....

    Some college and school authority things they are the law by themselves inside their premises and can do anything and everything they feel like. There are cases of taking heavy fine for small lapses and the public should know where that money goes? Some institutions dictate their term what to wear and what not, even if decently dressed. Some colleges’ confiscate the mobile phones and few others bring religion from the back doors. Some institutions insist to buy books from their book shop and eat food from their canteen but why? Few principals and HMs are very unreasonable and they physically punish, emotionally torture, sexually exploit and financially drain the weaker ones with unnecessary private tuitions. The commercializations of educational institutions are diluting the learning values.
