New Delhi, Dec 3 (IANS): Two members of infamous Hashim Baba gang, including a minor, were nabbed in connection with the firing outside the house of a scrap dealer in the Welcome area in northeast Delhi as part of Rs 50 lakh extortion bid.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, northeast Delhi, Joy Tirkey, said that on intervening night of November 27-28, Welcome police station received a call around 1 a.m. regarding firing at O Block.
"It was found that two boys had come on a scooty and fired some shots outside the house of Abrar Ahmed, 45, a scrap dealer and resident of Welcome area. Three empty shells were found at the spot. No one had been injured," he said.
Ahmed told police that he had recently received a call on his mobile phone demanding Rs 50 lakh.
"The caller claimed that he was calling on behalf of the Hashim Baba gang," the DCP said.
The DCP further said that on Sunday at about 3:20 a.m, two suspects were intercepted by the team near Yamuna Khadar, while they were travelling on a white scooty.
"When the duo was signalled to stop, they abandoned their scooty and tried to run away in the darkness. One of them, later identified as Akki a.k.a Sumit alias Pankaj (30), a resident of Harsh Vihar, opened fire at the police team," said the DCP.
The police team retaliated and Akki sustained bullet injury in his right leg. The police team managed to subdue the two suspects after a brief chase. Two good quality pistols were recovered from them.
On interrogation, Akki and the minor confessed to have fired shots outside the house of Ahmed and then called him to extort Rs 50 lakh.
"Akki is close to the Hashim Baba gang. Akki was taken to Jag Pravesh Chandra Hospital, where he is under treatment and is stable," said the DCP.
