Mangalore, Aug 28: As many as 75 residents of Malemar near Kottara Chowki under the banner of Jana Hitharakshana Samiti resorted to 'Shramadan', after their repeated appeals to the authorities to repair half a kilometre stretch of road went unheard.
The 200-member Samithi had submitted their appeal to repair the unmotorable road between the highway and Konchady four months ago.
The appeals were sent to 17th ward corporator Shashidhar Hegde, 23rd ward corporator Shankar Bhat and to others like the DC, the commissioner and the mayor, all in vain.
As the condition of the road worsened, it became intolerable, especially due to the fact that three buses ply on it every day.
On Sunday August 28, the residents decided to take the matter in their own hands and came together to fill the potholes on the road with the help of an earthmover provided by KUDCEMP. They removed the weeds thickly grown on both sides of the road.
Kumar Malemar, president of Jana Hitharakshana Samiti said that corporator Shashidhar Hegde had assured them of concreting the road this September. The Samiti will wait till October 15 for the realization of the promise, but if the administration fails even then, the Samiti along with the residents of the area will picket the MCC, he warned.
