Bantwal: Insta love marriage proves fatal - Young bride ends dowry harassment with suicide

Bantwal, Oct 30: The distressing case of a newlywed woman who took her own life due to alleged dowry harassment in her marital home has recently come to light.

The deceased is identified as Nauseen (22), a resident of Subhash Nagar in Sajeep Muda village.

Nauseen had entered into a love marriage with Azman from Ullal just three months ago. Although it was a love marriage, a substantial 180 grams of gold was given as a wedding gift or dowry. Unfortunately, her mother-in-law Zubaida, along with Nauseen's sister-in-law Azmea and her husband, reportedly subjected her to taunts and mental harassment, claiming that the dowry provided by the bride's family was insufficient. It is alleged that they criticized their son for marrying and falling in love with her. This persistent harassment reportedly led Nauseen to leave her husband's home in Ullala and return to her mother's house in Sajeepa. Mentally distressed, Nauseen took her own life by hanging herself in her room on August 25, when no one was at home.

A formal complaint has been filed with the Naseer Nagar police station.

Insta love

Nauseen, the daughter of K M Bawa, a resident of Sajeepa Muda, met Azman, a native of Ullal, through social media platforms, primarily Instagram. Their connection blossomed into love, and they received their families' consent to get married. On August 14, they officially tied the knot.

Nauseen's father generously gifted her 180 grams of gold for her wedding. However, Azman allegedly sold Nauseen's belongings within a few days of their marriage and constantly pressured her to provide more gold. In addition to this, her mother-in-law and sister-in-law allegedly subjected her to mental torture, using their love marriage as a pretext.

Nauseen reportedly confided in her family about her ordeal, which led her to seek refuge at her mother's home on August 24, unable to endure her in-laws' harassment. The following day, when her family was away at work, she took reportedly her own life by hanging herself in a room. The police complaint attributes her tragic death to her husband, mother-in-law, and sister-in-law.

A relative of Nauseen, Siddique, has called for a thorough investigation and legal action in the matter, seeking justice for Nauseen.

    Don't spare this grooms family and put them behind bars,,,a strict action needs to be taken and justice should be given to bride...This is still happening in some houses mostly mother in law and sister in law give taunts to the newly bride and we agree that this is happening still in our provinces. do something like Groom should never marry again to any girl. If he marry with any other girl next her life is also the same condition. circulate his name photo and address with his family members name and put a strong FIR case against the groom.

    Fantastic trick: First fall in love -> involve parents -> Boy benefits from the social norm. With or without arranged marriage, girl is the victim and the boy gets to enjoy all the benefits. Not that long ago, parents of both sides kept a distance and love marriage was not part of the social norm. I vividly remember an acquaintance joking that his is a love marriage but with all the benefits of arranged marriage. I stopped my exchanges with him from then on. Husband and in-laws must be thoroughly investigated and be brought to justice for this horrific crime.

    Very unfortuante. Thanks to fake world if insta and other social media sites. No doubt todays gen easily fall into trap with super posh pictures of the guys/girls on social media. The pics on insta and FB looks like they are high profile models. Wake up young gen.. There is much more in life than such stupid love.

    Only solution for like these cases is education. If the girl is graduate or post gradute then she will fight legally instead of suicide. Parents should give good education to girls specially instead of gold or dowry.

    Rita; this particular incident crosses all limits, but, overall, the first criterion before getting married is to see how much of wealth and property the other person has! In short, everything revolves around money! In this case, the boy should have been very strict and stopped his parents from harassing his wife for more money as he was in love with her!!

    Oi Ritakka...........I am living here in the UK for the last 20 years and my wife has kept all her gold in a safe deposit locker in her parents town of Belthangady since our marriage because she doesn't trust anyone both inside and outside the house here in the UK.     This death is on the hands of useless ulema of mangalore and the sleeping or media hungry so called muslim leaders. All they do is attend rich peoples function, ribbon cutting and go to gulf on invitation. This practice of dowry is begotten by the culture of the region and has no scope in islamic law. The value of mehr has become a joke infront if this dowry/gift given by bride. All they have to do is to announce fatwa to limit the gold given by brides family and cost of wedding spent. But its too much to expect anything from them.

    In Islam dowry is prohibited so as suicidal. Marriage could have been broken by divorce him when you see it not working. But killing herself is not a solution at all. On the other hand, the guilty must be punished.

    As per islam and prophets Teaching ... ... Boy Should give Dowry (Mahr) to girl during the time of wedding ...But no .... in asian Countries all going Against ....Even During Marriage functions there is no concept of 50 - 50 sharing of expenses between parties . .. Boys party should fully bear all the expensions of marriage .. by this the marraiage will have blessing and barkath. Also Lavish Wedding and Wastage is also not Recommended. After marriage Boy should Provide seperate accomadation to his wife.. if Not possible atleast seperate room in his house
