Kaup, Oct 6: In a tragic incident that occurred on Thursday October 5, a boy, who had gone to swim in the artificial pond at Belapau KIADB project area, drowned.
The deceased is identified as Vishwas Nayak (11), son of Kasturi, a resident of Belapu residential colony and seventh grade student of Innanje SVS English medium school.
Vishwas had gone with his neighbours Shashank and Naushad to learn swimming. His friends noticed Vishwas drowning and raised an alarm. Hearing the cries of women and children, Mallappa, who was nearby, lifted the boy up from the pond. Though he was rushed to Udupi hospital, he succumbed on the way.
It is learnt that Vishwas was the only son of a lonely mother, who used to take care of him with utmost love. She used to work in a medical shop to pay for the education of her son.
The pond where the boy drowned is adjacent to the residential area and the locals have appealed to concerned departments to close the same. However, their appeals fell on deaf ear. Local Jaheer Ahmed has urged the authorities to take action immediately to close the pond.
