Udupi, Oct 5: The Railway police personnel of Udupi station on Wednesday, October nabbed a theif who had stolen gold and other valuables from a passenger travelling on Nethravathi Express.
The accused has been identified as Sunny Malhotra (30), a resident of Delhi.
Kalyani Balakrishnan, a passenger, was traveling in Nethravathi Express had filed a FIR with railway police complaining about the theft of her bag containing valuables including gold ornaments, cards and cash etc from Train No 16346 in coach S-7.
On the basis of receipt of the passenger complaint, Sreekanth watched the activities on the platform. He noticed one person sitting suspiciously at the end of the platform. On enquiry, he produced his Mangaluru to Madgaon ticket dated October 4.
On inquiry, Sunny Malhotra suddenly threw up an ATM card on the platform side bushes which Sreekanth collected. On inquiry, the suspected person didn't give any satisfactory reply.
He was further interrogated and searched by ASI Sudheer Shetty along with other personnel. During interrogation, Sunny Malhotra agreed that he had indeed carried out the theft on the S-7 coach of the Nethravathi Express at Thokur station.
He deboarded from the slow moving train at the end of Thokur Station along with the stolen bag. He then opened the bag and emptied the cash and ornaments from the bag and threw the bag on the side bushes of the railway track. Further, he boarded the Tirunelveli – Dadar Express from Thokur outer end and deboarded at Udupi station.
During investigation, four gold chains weighing 93.17 grams worth Rs 6,75,000, Rs 3.700 in cash and an ATM card were found with him.
The accused along with stolen valuables was handed over to Manipal police and a FIR has been registered against him.
