Mangaluru: Tree cutting for flyover work begins, environmentalists oppose

Mangaluru, Oct 3: The process of tree cutting along NH 66 for the construction of flyovers at Nanthoor and KPT junctions has recently commenced, sparking concerns among environmentalists regarding the removal of fully grown trees.

Members of the Citizens for Sustainable Development group have voiced their objections to the tree cutting along the highway. They expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that permission had been granted despite objections from various environmentally friendly organizations. They had requested a thorough study before any trees were cut, but their appeals seemed to have fallen on deaf ears. According to them, the district administration, NHAI (National Highways Authority of India), and the Forest Department appear to show little concern for the environment.

“It is confirmed through RTI that there are technical flaws in the works that are planned by NHAI on Nanthoor and KPT flyovers. NHAI has not made proper arrangement in their plan for the rain water to flow. If the project is implemented as planned, citizens of Mangaluru will face problems in future. We drew the attention of district administration and district in charge minister in this regard. It is irony that without correcting the lacunas the project is being implemented,” they said.

    Flyover is a must in that area. When there is traffic congestion also people show their anger to the government. When something is moved for the betterment and safety of the people also you guys are objecting. Trees can be planted but lives lost cannot get back.

    National highways , railways always find only areas with trees to build ...somehow by magic ..this is cheating our next generations and India of valuable tree cover . Every tree removed should be declared and where is the timber going ....SC 9should interfere and UNESCO should come up with universal policies for trees

    Why do we need flyover, just for the elected representatives to make some quick money. Instead to avoid the pressure at the Nanthoor, KPT junction there should be signals before approaching the junctions. For example from between Pumpwell and Nanthoor there should be a signal. But the excuse will be it is the Highway cannot have signals, why not have signals??

    Cut the trees if it’s necessary. Later on mentalists should guide the government to replant the trees adjacent to highways. Because of traffic congestion and illogical diversions lots of human lives are lost. NHAI is one of the highly corrupt authority of India, they are the one who submit fake status reports on highways to ministry to allow contractors to collect excess and early collection of tolls . Other than SC no one can stop these Toll mafia and politicians.

    A tree will be felled even if it is avoidable. It is a bonus (in addition to their usual cut) to all those involved in lucrative projects.

    your Environmentalists & land owners are the reason why flyover took such a delay, more than environmentalists, land owners are refusing to give up especially for mangalore - moodbidri highway still pending from kulshekar itself.

    Study by Indian Institute of Science says Bangalore's green cover has come down alarmingly from 68% in 1973 to 6% in 2017. And we know the repercussions due to this. Now its the turn of Mangalore, if statistics have to be gathered. Rather than complaining today on Cauvery, its time to conserve our green cover whether it is Bangalore or Mangalapuram. Time to involve conservationists / architects well versed in tunnels & bridges to be involved in this discussion while cutting down trees & making roads.

    It is inevitable for some trees to be felled in every development work. However the NHAI should take responsibility of making appropriate arrangement to plant new ones and also see if any of the fully grown trees can be shifted to other places. Any development work should be conducted keeping nature in mind. I sincerely hope this time around, the flyover work will be completed on time and also maintain quality of the work. It is really saddening to see that Mangalore and Udupi are always treated wrongly when it comes to development opportunities. Being a regular traveler to Bangalore and back, I see about 6 flyovers at places where it is not required at all. And moreover the flyovers are near completion within 2 years. But nanthoor took 10 years. I hope things go well this time keeping peoples woes in mind.

    We require Nature & Nature do not require us. Its unfortunate that we are in Mangalore still do not believe the importance of nature after recent summer as well the delay & short fall of rain.
