Oval, Aug 19: Thanks to rains, the first day of the final cricket test match between India and England was almost washed out. England made a steady start with star England openers Alastair Cook and Andrew Strauss showing all signs of dominating yet again. The pair continued their form from the third test, and remained unbeaten on a 75-run partnership.
Only one session was possible on day 1. The Indian bowling, apart from Ishant Sharma, looked ordinary and harmless. The only change in the Indian team was R P Singh who came in place of injured Praveen Kumar. R P did not show much talent here, unlike in his last tour to England.
Former cricketer and commentator Sunil Gavaskar was surprised with RP SIngh's selection ahead of Munaf Patel. He slammed the selectors for choosing him over Munaf who has been with the team for over 45 days. Munaf should have been picked instead of R P Singh, who joined the team after Zaheer Khan's injury, he said.
The weather forecast indicates possible rains on the third and fourth days of the match. If England can get three full days, India will surely have a tough time saving the game.
With the Indian players showing no signs of confidence after the 0-3 setback, will this test match have to be saved by rain gods?
Many feel that only rain can save the Indian team, and not the players.
