Bengaluru, Sep 23: Though the Supreme Court ordered to release 5000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu every day, the state cabinet decided to release only 3500 cusecs till September 26, keeping in mind the current situation of the state.
Speaking to reporters after the cabinet meeting, DyCM D K Shivakumar said, “The AAG explained the details of the inquiry that was held in Supreme Court with regards to release of water from Cauvery river. The Supreme Court order will be abided by the government. Till September 26, water will be released to Tamil Nadu. Now the inflow of Cauvery is 8000 cusecs. Already we are releasing 3000-3500 cusecs of water. Till September 26, we will release water. We are committed to protect the wellbeing of our farmers as well as provide drinking water.
“Tamil Nadu has objected to Mekedaatu project in the Supreme Court. However, the Supreme Court judge has questioned Tamil Nadu on its objection to Mekedaatu as Karnataka is doing the project on its land.
“Hence, we have decided to go ahead with Mekedaatu project. We will take all approvals including Union environmental ministry,” he said.
