Mangalore, Aug 14: "Media plays a dominant role in curbing anti-social elements and thereby upholds the values of democracy. Whenever things go wrong, it is the media that acts as a whistleblower to alert the people. However, unnecessary statements given in the media attract wrong interpretation from the opposition parties and the general public, so I desist from speaking to the media unless necessary," said chief minister Sadananda Gowda.
He was speaking at 'meet the press' programme held at the Press Club on Sunday August 14.
He further said that he would make arrangements in his schedule to meet the media persons at least for an hour every week. He has instructed his office to make note of reports appearing in various media and to sort out issues relating to welfare of the people, he added.
Gowda said that he would invite leaders from the opposition like Siddaramaiah, Revanna, Motamma and M C Nanaiah and others either on Tuesday or Wednesday.
He instructed the officers of various departments in the district to make sure that the deprived classes of people, in particular, get benefit from the government without any delay.
"My success depends on how the officers in various departments work," the CM noted. He also instructed them not to keep files pending in the taluk office for more than 15 days.
About the police department, he said people should respect the police and the police too should earn people's respect with their deeds.
As the financial ministry is handled by him, he would see that his hometown (Dakshina Kannada district) would get priority while releasing money for various projects, he assured.
He also said that he would discuss the possibility of giving more power to the state Lokayukta with senior leaders before arriving at a decision.
The CM's interaction was sprinkled with a good dose of humour, as when he responded to a query by a pressperson who asked who would be included in the next cabinet expansion. With a smile, Gowda answered, "Could be anyone, but not you!".
Minister Krishna J Palemar, state assembly deputy speaker Yogish Bhat, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, DK district working journalists’ union president P B Harish Rai, secretary Shreenivas Indaje among others were present. Senior journalist Manohar Prasad spoke on the occasion. Journalist Ravindra Shetty compered the programme.
Earlier in the day at 7 am he visited Kadri Sri Manjunath Temple, and later headed to Kudroli Sri Gokarnanatheshwar temple, Jeppinamogaru Guruvana Sri Durga Kshetra and Venkatarama Temple in Car Street. He will be visiting Kateel Sri Durga Parameshwari temple in the afternoon. At 3.50 pm he will leave for Bangalore from Bajpe Airport.
