Mangaluru, Aug 25: The fourth session of the Life Skills Workshop Series-2023 titled ‘Domestic wet waste management skill’ was organized on August 11 at SJEC AICTE IDEA Lab.
Ramitha Shailendra Rao, social activist and entrepreneur from Karkala was the resource person for the programme. She is also honoured for her achievements in social service with the Kittur Rani Chennamma Award by the government of Karnataka and the Youth Icon award by the Udupi Kannada culture department.
The workshop was an eye-opener for the participants as they learned about problems generated due to waste dumping, the non-segregation of waste, and its environmental impact. The resource person then explained various techniques used to utilize wet waste and gave a demonstration of the ‘pipe composting method’ to manage kitchen waste. It requires about 10 feet in height and 3 to 5-inch diameter PVC pipe, an equal quantity of cow dung and jaggery, and a small quantity of curd along with the wet waste. Those who do not have land area and live in a flat can use the three-pot method with a similar approach to generate manure from the decomposition of kitchen waste. A total of 50 participants actively participated which included both staff and students.
At the end of the session, participants shared their experience and valuable feedback regarding the workshop and appreciated the efforts put by the institution in coming up with these useful life skills initiatives for the students at the SJEC. The domain expert was felicitated with memento as a token of gratitude for sharing her knowledge to the students. The workshop witnessed the active participation of teaching staff, technical staff of SJEC AICTE IDEA Lab as well as a few non-teaching staff.
