Mumbai Coast Guard Confirm Oil Spill

Mumbai, Aug 8: The Coast Guard on Sunday August 7 confirmed that  there has been an oil spill following the sinking of M V Rak Carrier 20 miles off the Mumbai coast with about 60,054 tonnes of coal, 290 tonnes of fuel oil and 50 tonnes of diesel.

About one-two tonnes of oil is reportedly leaking from the vessel per hour.

A coast guard official said that the oil spill was noticed on Saturday August 6 afternoon by a pollution control vessel 'Samudra Prahari'. The oil spill is said to be concentrated in a mile by 0.3 mile area around the vessel and has spread to about seven nautical miles, he said.

Also other vessels like Sankalp and a Chetak helicopter are being used for spreading oil dispersants.

The Samudra Prahari is said to be equipped to deal with a leakage of upto 300 tonnes per hour.
