Bharat Ratna Proposal for Sachin with Govt

New Delhi, Aug 4 (PTI): The government on Wednesday said it had received requests from various quarters for conferring the Bharat Ratna on Sachin Tendulkar, adding that a proposal to confer the country’s highest civilian award to sportspersons was under consideration.

Minister of State for Home, Mullappally Ramachandran, said according to the President’s Secretariat’s notification (No 1 -Pers./55 dated 8-1-1955), Bharat Ratna is awarded for exceptional services in arts, literature and science and in recognition of public services of the highest order.

“A suggestion regarding modification in the existing eligibility norms has been received and is under consideration of the government,” he said in the Rajya Sabha when asked if the government proposed to amend the rules to confer the award on the cricketer.

Sports Bill

The Sports Ministry said it would introduce the National Sports Development Bill in the current session of parliament in a bid to bring transparency in sports administration.

“With a view to enforcing the principles of good governance and transparency in the administration of sports at the national level, the ministry has proposed to introduce a draft of the National Sports Development Bill in the current session of parliament,” Sports Minister Ajay Maken said in the Lok Sabha.

Maken said several responses had been received on the draft bill, which was placed in public domain in February.

    Wow!! "Bharat Ratna" sounds so great, but you guys don't think it sounds so low when it is been proposed for a cricketer while they play for money and fame? they are been paid for playing win or lose.beside that we pay them by watching the matches. So this highest Honour should go to the people who serve for the country, person who dies proctecting us and to the people who works for the developement of the country and to the social workers. So think before giving to sachin or else it will be a insult you Mother Theresa because see as received this highest Honour.

    Bharatha ratna should be given to the heroes who has sacrificed their life to the country. i dont think sachin has sacrificed anything to the country he has played cricket for these many years. what about the people who are in border serving the country consider them for the bharatha ratna .i am requesting with the govt to consider our soldiers not cricket stars who are behind money,fame,advertisement.

    Gentlemen,
    Bharat Ratna is all set to lose its significance like all the other sports awards we have.
    There are so many awards in India that one wonders that the award names have outnumbered the achievers and achievements.
    Moreover, why only cricket is within the purview of this award. Why not other sports? We do have great personalities in those too. Only thing is that the media has not brought them to light!!!!!!
    When one hears OSCAR, GRAMMY, EMMY and TONY awards, which commands the respect all across the world, we still have more and more less significant awards in the desi style with least number of achievers.
    Instead of wasting our time thinking of awarding Bharat Ratna and all those synonymous awards to these guys, lets try to build more achievers at the global level.
    Out of the 193 countries in the world, there are 16 countries only recognised by ICC as Cricket playing nations (out of which 8 are at the nascent stage) and for SRT to be considered a Legend and to adore with Bharat Ratna, doesn't seem convincing enough.
    We need to look beyond Cricket, like Asian Games, Commonwealth, Olympics, and Soccer WC which is the widely played sport in the world.
    Preserve the sanctity Bharat Ratna deserves and the people who have already been honored with the same.
    Hope someone in this country realize its not a award which can be bought with sheer political and people sentiment pressure and reduce it like a Arjuna or Drona Award both of which has no significance anymore

    Mr. Roland, ur comment is right. He only played for records, amd made lot of money, his charity work also very less. There are so many people in India who helped to develop the nation like Infosys Narayanmoorthy, Anna, etc. Govt should consider thease people rather than Tendulkar.

    Bharat Ratna should be given to heroes and winners and not to losers.Tendulkar's performance in England where we have been thoroughly decimated is sofar way below average.

    I dont think Sachin deserves Bharat Ratna. No doubt he has made India "proud", but I feel he is a selfish person, rather played for his own self. I think there are many other deserving men & women who can be considered.

    If Atal Behari Vajpayee deserves Bharat Ratna I believe Narendra Modi the CM of Gujarat and futue potential PM also deserves it for transforming Gujarat into one of the top states in India
