Puttur, Jul 26: The prices of pepper in the market has skyrocketed as it breached the Rs 600 level after a gap of seven years.
On July 24, pepper was being bought in the outer market between Rs 590-605 a kilo. In Campco, the prices hovered at Rs 550 a kilo and when compared to outside market, pepper prices were Rs 40-50 lower at Campco.
In 2015-16, pepper prices had hit a high of Rs 675-700 a kilo but it plummeted to a low of Rs 300 a kilo. However, in the last three years, pepper prices had not crossed the Rs 500-level.
Due to steady increase in demand for the commodity, pepper prices have breached the Rs 600-level in July this year. The prices of pepper are likely to further harden due to increase in demand.
In Campco market on July 22, the pepper prices stood at Rs 510 a kilo which rose to Rs 520 on July 24. On July 25, the price of the commodity further rose to Rs 550 a kilo. Thus, the price of pepper rose Rs 30 in just one single day.
In Mangaluru areca market, the price of the areca has continued to rise. On July 25, the areca was being bought at Rs 440 a kilo but in Campco it was being bought at Rs 432 a kilo. If the prices of areca were Rs 425 a kilo on July 11 at Campco the commodity was sold at Rs 430 a kilo in the outer market. However, the price of single and double varieties of areca have remained steady.
