Mangaluru, Jul 25: The NHAI has made comprehensive plans to overcome traffic issues at main junctions. As a first phase preparations are on for vehicular overpass near KPT.
Trinity Group, builders from Hubballi have bagged the contract. The cost is Rs 40 crore. An appeal has been sent to union minister in this regard from the district administration.
Traffic congestion on the 1.6 km-stretch from Nanthoor Junction to KPT is a daily affair. All vehicles arriving to the city and going to airport should go via this junction. The upcoming vehicular overpass will be built on both sides of the road and pedestrian service road too.
In order to implement the project, 602 trees will be cut. This is identified by New Mangaluru Port Road Company Limited. Around 370 trees can be shifted. However, 232 trees have to be felled as there is no other option. Public objection in this regard was taken in the meeting that was held earlier in the month at the office of deputy conservator of forest, Mangaluru zone.
Dr Bharat Shetty, MLA north legislative council constituency, said, “Traffic at the KPT junction is a daily affair. I had instructed the NHAI for an overpass at the spot. Hence, a modern overpass at a cost of Rs 40 crore will be built.”
Aniruddha, project director of NHAI said, “Approval is given to build a vehicular overpass near KPT at a cost of Rs 40 crore. Once the technical issues are cleared by the local administration, work on the overpass will be started.”
