Mangaluru: Huge tree falls, Chilimbi area completely blocked off

Mangaluru, Jul 22: The main road from Ladyhill Narayana Guru Circle to Urwa Stores was completely blocked off following the fall of a huge banyan tree across the road on Saturday July 22.

The tree, situated near the Ladyhill bus stop outside Urwa School Complex, succumbed to torrential rains and is believed to have got uprooted at about 9 pm. Police and fire brigade personnel are on the scene, trying to cut through the debris with wood cutters. As of yet, no loss of life or property has been reported.

The old banyan tree was a landmark and a fevourite of the residents. Dr Molly S Chaudhuri, director of Manel Srinivas Nayak Institute of Management (MSNIM) has shared some photos of the tree when it was erect taken during her morning walks. 



























 

The tree is said to have fallen slowly, thereby avoiding any casualties. No vehicular movement is possible on the road and traffic is being diverted. The road clearing work is made difficult due to the rain.

    @Monty, FYI India clocked the second highest rate of deforestation among countries worldwide between 2015-2020; lost 6,68,400 hectares of forest cover during this period! Nobody is bothered; upright activists and advisors are forced to scoot! If this denudation continues and intensive afforestation carried out, we are doomed with the drastic climate change and ElNino effect adding to the woes! Sorry state of affairs 😞!!

    Compared to the yearly average it's very much deficient, the effect of which will be out next summer; along with water we will have to get ready for food scarcity with price rise; a clear indication comes from the recent blanket ban on rice exports except basmati and some other varieties! BTW, Italy, Spain, Greece, parts of the US are facing record high temperatures, which is also affecting the crop yield! We will not be immune to such dramatic climate changes for long, so cannot be complacent!!

    Always before start of monsoon period, the MCC should carry out an inspection of all trees standing by the roadside and prune them properly so that no untoward incidents like these happen, which may cause damage to limbs and property. Wake up MCC !

    Increasing forest area is good for rains. Planting trees by roadside gives shade only, the trees have to be properly maintained and pruned from time to time otherwise such incidents occur. Thank God no human life was lost.
