Udupi, Jul 15: Stagnant rainwater has turned into sewage and led to a mosquito breeding ground in Adi Udupi opposite to Udupi Urban Development Authority (UUDA) office here.
Helipad, soil testing center, Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) and income tax office are situated in the surrounding areas. Being a densely populated area, migrant workers reside here and there are more commuters. The mosquitoes and insects breeding in the sewage are likely to transmit diseases to people here.
Due to the lack of proper arrangement of drainage for rainwater to flow, the pit has converted into a natural sewage storage. It is observed, during the construction of new buildings, no arrangements are made for free flow of rainwater. The cleanliness in the government building is maintained, but the outside area has been completely neglected. The same situation is seen at every office. Mosquito bites are not amiss for those performing duty in these offices.
Social activist Ganesh Raj Saralabettu and Jaya Shetty Bannanje have demanded the district administration to take immediate action and clear the mess. The city municipality authorities must spray insecticides here and carry out cleanliness awareness programmes, opine the general public.
