Mangaluru, Jul 14: Though there is facility for the rain water to flow, hundreds of houses and apartment complex buildings have connected their rain water pipes to the underground drainage (UGD) system. This causes manholes to overflow at several places in the city making the environment fill with foul odour.
Some house owners and apartment complex people have connected the rain water outlets to the underground drainage system to avoid waterlogging inside their premises.
The water from manholes overflows and ends up in houses in low-lying areas. In addition, the underground drainage processing units are receiving double the amount of sewage which makes their work difficult.
In and around Mangaluru, 22 wet wells are built including areas like Kudroli, Pandeshwar, Padil, Yekkur and Kottara Chowki. This means that the water from bathroom and washing basins is flowing into wetwell crossing the manhole through underground drainage. This goes to four STPs (Sewage Treatment Plant) built by the city corporation.
The sewage water is processed at 16 MLD capacity STP at Suratkal, 20 MLD STP at Jeppinamogaru, 44 MLD STP at Kavoor and 8.7 MLD at Pacchanady. Only the sewage water of this capacity is taken in by the processing STPs. If more water is received, then it develops back pressure which in turn overflows from the manholes.
