Udupi, Jul 14: It has been over a month since the ban on mechanised boat fishing was imposed. But, so far the traditional state boat fishing activity has not commenced. As there was inadequate rainfall during June and due to lack of winds in the sea there has been a considerable delay in resumption of state boat fishing.
There are fishermen in Kundapur, Kodi of Byndoor, Gangolli, Kanchugodu, Hosapete, Maravanthe, Trasi, Kodeeri, Uppanda's Madikal and Alvegadde where state boats are used. In Uppanda there are 1,500 state boats, in Gangolli there are 300 singles and more 35 mixed joint boats adding to about 600 state boats.
In Maravanthe, there are 100 joint boats and 150 mixed single boats but due to delay in the onset of monsoon there is no fishing activity among state boat fishermen. There are more than 3,000 state boats that are currently anchored at the ports awaiting the winds and appropriate weather conditions.
Fishermen of Kundapur and Byndoor are likely to venture into the sea going by the current conditions by July 15.
