Beltangady, Jul 13: Dharmasthala police arrested four people, in connection with transporting cattle in an inhumane manner in three vehicles.
The arrested are identified as Pramod Salian from Mortaje in Navoor village, Pushparaj from Olagadde, Channakeshava from Arakalagoodu in Hassan and Sandeep Hirebeleguli, a resident of Holenarasipura. All four are said to be active workers of the BJP.
Police confiscated three vehicles, six cows and two male calves from the accused.
Acting on a definite tip-off, a police team led by Dharmasthala police station SI Anil Kumar was checking the vehicles near Kanyadi Ram Mandir of Dharmasthala in the night on July 12. Around 8.45 pm, it came to light that three vehicles including two pick-ups going to Dharmasthala from Ujire transporting cattle.
On inquiry, police came to know that the cattle was being taken for selling. In total, eight cattle including six cows and two male calves were confiscated by the police.
The value of the confiscated cattle is said to be Rs 65000 and that of the vehicles is Rs seven lac.
Dharmasthala police are investigating further.
