Bantwal, Jul 27: A bridge linking Amtoor village and neighbouring villages in the taluk collapsed on Monday July 25. The bridge was built 30 years ago and was in a deplorable state recently. Despite the local media reporting the issue, department officials lacked the will to take early steps for its repairs.
Dakshina Kannada district-in-charge minister Krishna J Palemar had surveyed the state of the bridge and assured swift repairs that have not been undertaken, owing to which the bridge collapsed. It was the lifeline for the local peasants, students, and the general public. Dakshina Kannada DC Dr Chennappa Gowda paid a visit to the site of the collapsed bridge in Amtoor.
Former MLA K Padmanabha Kottari, the state Bala Bhavan Society chairman Sulochana G K Bhat, Goltamajal gram panchayat president Monappa Devasya, TP vice president Dinesh Amtoor, PWD engineer and other department officers were present on the occasion.
Addressing the locals on Tuesday July 26, MLA Ramanath Rai after viewing the collapsed bridge along with ZP members Chandraprakash Shetty and Mamata Gatti, said that a proposal has been sent to state administration to construct a new bridge under NABARD project.
