Mumbai, Jul 26 (IANS): There were chaotic scenes in the Maharashtra assembly Tuesday as the opposition united to demand the implementation of the death sentence to Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone Pakistani terrorist captured after the 26/11 terror attack.
Soon after the monsoon session of the state legislature convened, members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Shiv Sena, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and others started shouting slogans like "Hang Kasab, or quit office" as the speaker appealed for peace.
The opposition members also demanded a discussion on the July 13 Mumbai serial blasts that have left 24 dead and injured more than 120.
Moving an adjournment motion, Leader of Opposition (BJP) Eknath Khadse said it was imperative that Kasab, the perpetrator of 2008 terror siege, be hanged in order to secure the people of the city.
As the uproarious scenes continued, the house was adjourned for 10 minutes.
Opposition members immediately moved out of the house and gathered near the entrance of the complex, raised banners and placards and continued to raise slogans demanding the noose for Kasab.
On Monday, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan had assured the house that the state government would take all measures to ensure that incidents like the July 13 serial blasts did not recur anywhere in the state.
He further said the government was committed to bringing the perpetrator of the incident and terror forces behind them to book.
"We shall give them the severest punishment and ensure that such terror attacks are not repeated," a grim Chavan said, offering condolences to the victims families and solace to those injured in the blasts at the business hubs of Opera House, Zaveri Bazar and Dadar west.
