Udupi: Assailants Open Fire in Barkur over Money Matter, No Injuries

Udupi, Jul 24: Unidentified assailants opened fire outside a house in Barkur here on Sunday July 24, allegedly over a money matter.
The incident was reported at the house of a certain Shaukat Ali, residing in Bennekudru Road, Barkur on Sunday. Shaukat Ali’s brother Abid Ali who runs a business in Dubai was believed to have borrowed Rs 8 crore from a moneylender.
Shaukat Ali used to get calls from unknown people demanding their money back and asking the whereabouts of Abid Ali. They also threatened to kill Shaukat Ali if he failed to arrange for the return of their money.
The assailants arrived at Shaukat Ali's house at about 12-45 am on Sunday July 24 and rang the door bell. When he did not open the door, they started firing gun shots. The walls and door of the house have bullet marks.
Police sources informed that Shaukat Ali denied any involvement in his brother’s business and said that he had no idea about his whereabouts. Shaukat lives with his wife and three children at Barkur.
Deputy SP Jayant V Shetty, Brahmavar circle inspector G Krishnamurti, sub-inspector Hosakerappa and fingerprint experts arrived at the crime spot and investigations are in progress.
