Cricket: Did Dhoni Make Mockery of Test Cricket?

Daijiworld Media Network

New Delhi, Jul 23: To every one's surprise on the second day of the first India-England test at Lord's on Friday July 22, Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni removed his glows, handed them over to make-shift wicket-keeper Rahul Dravid and walked into bowl himself.

Known to the world as one of the best wicket keeper-batsmen in cricket, and more than that, for his cool but successful captaincy, Dhoni is not so popular for his bowling skills.

This move by Dhoni has come under heavy fire from former Indian cricket captain Kapil Dev, who told a TV channel that by bowling himself on the very second day of a crucial test match, Dhoni has made mockery of Test cricket. Being a wicket-keeper, he should not have done that, he said.

But does Dhoni really deserve such criticism? One would say no, because in his very first over, Dhoni almost took the wicket of Peterson twice. In the first ball, KP was completely beaten, and late in the over he almost got out but survived because of Hot Spot reference system!

If Dhoni had taken a couple of wickets in his 8-over spell, would Kapil have passed such comments on the Indian captain?

When someone is not getting out for such a longer period, it is worth trying out every strategy that is available, and I don`t blame Dhoni for trying out such a move. After all, it was only the Test Match and it was not a tight situation when generally one would not try such a venture.

Kapil Dev is right to comment on this issue. If all the players are given 2 or 3 overs to bowl, by luck some of them may get one or two wickets even some times one of them may break world record also.

This is really mockery by Dhoni, b'cos he earned what he is deserved, so winning or losing doesn't matter for him. On the other side Indian team is a mix up of decent and worst behaved players on the field like Praveen Kumar, Kholi, Yuvaraj, Harbajan, Shreesant Zaheer etc. Any particular incident they act like butchers. Its exibition of dogs face sometimes.
