Udupi, Jun 19: The department of pharmacy practice, Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) Manipal, along with Global Cancer Consortium, organised a lectureand workshop on cancer research as a part of the Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences Diamond Jubilee Commemorative Lecture Serieson June 16.

Dr Surulivel Rajan M, professor and head of the department of pharmacy practice, welcomed the gathering.

Professor Dr Sooryanarayana Varambally, an esteemed scientist, was the resource person for the programme. Dr Varamballypresently holds several esteemed positions, including Scientist (C) at the Informatics Institute and O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Senior Scientist (C) at the Nephrology Research & Training Center, and Director of Pathology at the Joint Academic Departments at UAB.

Dr Varambally is engaged in research pertaining to the elucidation of the molecular basis of cancer through an integrative genomic, epigenetic, and proteomic approach.

Dr Varambally gave an insightful lecture on the topic 'Evolution and Future of OMICS in Cancer'. He gave an overview of cancer pathogenesis, the role of various biomarkers and technologies in cancer, and the potential opportunities for mining big data from various databases such as UALCAN.More than 90 participants, including faculty, PhD scholars, and postgraduate students from different institutes of the Manipal Academy of Higher Education, attended the programme.

This was followed by a 2-hour hands-on Workshop on UALCAN Database: “Mining of Big Data in Cancer OMICS”, which was attended by about 70 participants. The programme was concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Mahadev Rao.
