Mangaluru: Lightning strikes electricity meter, household items gutted

Mangaluru, May 31: Fire erupted in one part of the house of Bhaskara Devadiga, resident of Bellayaru village under the limits of Padupanambur gram panchayat due to lightning strike on Tuesday May 30. The household items in the residence got gutted in the mishap.

As the lightning struck directly to the electricity meter there was a short circuit and the fire mishap occurred. Many household items are damaged and also the roof of the house is reduced to ashes.

The fire was brought under control immediately with the help of locals and more damage was prevented. Village accountant Mohan visited the spot and submitted a report on the losses incurred by the house owner.

For an indirect lightening strike which strike the electricity cables on the street and then travels into the homes you can install a device called Type 1 + 2 SPD (Surge Protection Device) at the meter box where main lines connect to the home. A current rating of 40 kiloAmps and 320volts for SPD should be sufficient. This device will activate and divert all lightening energy to earthing saving all your precious electrical and electronic equipment. In case of a high voltage surge also this equipment will activate.

    Due to this lightening lot of loss and burnt electronics and house etc is the effect in mangalore .Its better when it starts lightening please put off main switch always .Mostly people who do agriculture have their pumps on should be careful. Very sad to hear house and electric meter is gutted.Hope he gets some help from govt.Important is thank God no person is injured .
